Fly fishing supply store to open

A new store carrying fly fishing supplies, at the convergence of Route 257 and Innis Street Extension in Seneca, is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“We have all kinds of fly fishing gear for novices and children up to your most experienced angler,” said Kory Van Tassel, owner of The Fly Stop.

The shop, he said, is fully stocked for fly fishing and carries all the major brands. One of the store’s specialties is a large selection of flies.

Van Tassel said The Fly Stop also will offer fishing instruction and guiding on “anything from trout to musky.”

After growing up in western Pennsylvania and working in a fly fishing shop for about a decade, Van Tassel said he opened his own shop, also called.

The Fly Stop, and moved out West, where he again opened his shop in San Diego.

He moved back to western Pennsylvania and opened The Fly Stop in New Castle before moving this shop to its new location at the top of Seneca Hill.

“There hasn’t been a fly fishing shop in this area since 2019,” he said. “This area is a mecca for fly fishing in the Allegheny River, Oil Creek, French Creek and Sandy Creek.”
