Man charged with homicide in Crawford County death

From staff reports

A Saegertown man was charged with homicide Monday in connection with the discovery of a woman’s body last month in Crawford County.

Meadville state police said Ragene Gilbert, 25, was found to be a suspect after extensive investigations into the death of Destine Conyers, 21, of Townville.

Police said Conyers’ body was found Sept. 27 near a pull-off from Mule Street between Interstate 79 and Reash Church Road in Fairfield Township.

Conyers’ death was ruled a homicide following an Oct. 1 autopsy that reported she died from gunshots to her head and torso causing blunt force trauma, police said.

Gilbert has been charged with felony counts of criminal homicide and possession of a prohibited firearm.

He was arraigned Monday and confined to the Crawford County jail after bail was denied. A preliminary hearing is scheduled Nov. 8.

Police said they cooperated with federal, state, and local law enforcement, and many interviews were conducted throughout Crawford, Erie, Mercer, and Beaver counties during the investigation.
