Pointe warming center open to anyone on cold nights

The Pointe in Oil City is experiencing low usage of its warming center.

“Our numbers seem to be down this year and it could be because of COVID… people are afraid,” said Angela Proper, The Point’s executive director.

Proper said the county comes in every Monday morning with a portable fogger to sanitize the building, and even if nobody uses the facility the staff still follows its protocol of wiping everything down.

When activated, the warming center at 259 Seneca St. in Oil City is open from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. for anyone to use. The center will be determined to be activated by 6:30 p.m. for use whenever temperatures are 25 degrees or lower, with or without wind chill factor.

Proper said The Pointe doesn’t just provide a warm place for people to stay.

“We try to get information from them, to see what’s going on,” she said.

But the center is there for “anybody without heat for any reason. It’s as simple as that,” Proper said.
