Venango County broadband efforts moving ahead

Venango County commissioners keep pushing forward with broadband upgrade efforts in the county.

Commissioner Mike Dulaney said the county is waiting for an agreement with an internet provider to be approved by attorneys for the county and provider. The commissioners will reveal who the provider is once the deal is finalized.

Commissioner Sam Breene explained that the county can’t be a provider, so a third party provider must be found that will utilize the county’s broadband infrastructure.

The current broadband project uses very different technology than the fiber the county laid a number of years ago but builds off the fiber the county had previously laid, Breene said. This provides high speed internet to many larger businesses in the county, Breene added.

Breene said that Zito, the company the county contracted with to be the internet provider for the fiber, only serves businesses and won’t provide residential internet. The new equipment the county has put up will be used to provide residential internet.

Breene said the project is coming along in a timely fashion.

“This was only a concept last January and we knew we had the funding in June,” Breene said.
