Venango County to participate in overdose awareness day

The Venango County Human Services department will participate in Wednesday’s observance of International Overdose Awareness Day for the second year.

Susan Huffman, the senior program specialist with the Human Services department, said the department will conduct a drive thru free distribution of Deterra bags and Narcan at the Venango County Training Center at 737 Elk St. in Franklin from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Huffman said free medication lock boxes for storing prescription medication will also be given away.

Huffman said the lock boxes are good for anyone who “wants to keep their medication under lock and key.”

Community members can observe the day by “being aware of what overdoses are and avoiding the stigma,” Huffman said. People can wear purple to observe the day as well.

Huffman said the Human Services department posted a flier on its Facebook page and also had a representative passing out fliers in the community on Monday.

Huffman said participation by Human Services in the overdose awareness day is something she plans to continue for years to come.

She also said there isn’t anything new in this year’s observance, but she hopes next year will be a little different.

“(This) is a day for everyone to remember their loved ones affected by overdoses and not feel ashamed or guilty and have more awareness about it,” Huffman said.
