Yoga glows in the dark at Clarion University

Clarion Call reports

On Saturday, Feb. 2, the University Activity Board (UAB) held a glow yoga event from 8-10 p.m. in the multipurpose room in the Gemmell Student Complex, as part of the “Every Friday and Saturday Night” (EFSN) program.

According to Samantha Schlak, president of UAB, glow yoga is a type of yoga in which the participants paint themselves with ultraviolet (UV) reactive paint, also called glow paint, and then proceed to go through an otherwise normal yoga session while glowing under UV black lights.

Schlak said that the glow yoga event was the first event in what is called the Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series, also known as the Seifert Series. Schlak provided, “Seifert loved music and the arts. As an investment in young people, she chose to endow a culture and lecture series at Clarion University to ignite the passion for learning that she encouraged. Through that endowment, the Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series Endowment of the Clarion University Foundation, Inc., was established to provide the Clarion University community with cultural experiences that inspire learning through thoughtful discussions.”

The EFSN program is a series of weekly activities and events that are hosted by UAB at 8 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night in the Gemmell Student Complex. The program was created to meet the goal of having more fun and exciting programs and events on the weekends for university students and faculty. A schedule of future events can be found on the Weekly Activities and Events page on the Clarion University website.

The UAB oversees various programs for the students of Clarion University. The UAB office is located on the second floor of the Gemmell Student Complex in Room 249. The organization’s weekly meetings are open to the public and take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays in Room 246 of Gemmell. The UAB also hosts a UAB Night every Thursday night in the same building. The schedule of future events can be found on the Weekly Activities and Events page on the Clarion University website.

The UAB is made up of the Arts, CampusFest, Lecture, Community Service/Collaboration Multicultural, Public Relations, Recreation, Special Events, Weekend Programming and the Gemmell Activities Committees.

Anyone who wishes to get involved with the UAB must first visit their office or attend one of their meetings in Gemmell. They must also participate in the meeting and then attend the event of which they had a part in planning. Anyone who would like to attend the UAB’s next meeting should contact Brian Hoover, the UAB Advisor, at (814) 393-2356, or at bhoover@clarion.edu.

The UAB will also occasionally have board positions for which students may apply. These positions will be announced on the UAB’s website and also through university email. Applications can be picked up at the information desk that is located on the second floor of the Gemmell Student Complex.
