Cranberry supervisors hear updates on 2 projects

Plans are moving ahead on two Cranberry Township projects.

At a supervisors meeting Thursday, Barrie Brancato, chairman of the township’s economic development committee, said she and others met recently to discuss how a township industrial site can be readied for development.

The township has a 10-acre parcel, located near Airport Road, that is tabbed as an industrial site.

The multi-acre tract has various owners, including private individuals and the Oil Region Alliance. Delaying any development is the location of a major power line that runs through the property.

Noting the discussion with Alliance executive director John Phillips was “very favorable,” Brancato said, “We think we’ll get some movement there.”

A second project focuses on the construction of a senior housing development for low- to moderate-income individuals. A portion of a 93-acre lot owned by the township adjacent to UPMC Northwest has been designated as a housing site. The Hudson Group is working on the project with the township.

Brancato said a session with a Hudson Group representative, state Rep. Lee James and state Sen. Scott Hutchinson focused on an application submitted for federal grant money to build the complex, one that will include 30 to 40 rental units for senior citizens. Both legislators, she said, are helping to advance the project.

“We made an application (for funding) in November and will learn probably in May,” said Brancato, adding the Hudson Group is building a similar housing complex in Clarion and has one completed in Conneaut Lake.

An overall concept plan for the development includes future buildings such as residential homes and an assisted living facility.

Building permits filed

In other business Thursday, Ben Breniman, the township zoning officer, told the supervisors five building permits listing an estimated construction value of $209,600 were filed with the township last month.

One permit was for a new business, Chris’s Tire Service, that intends to open a 7,500-square foot retail store at the corner of Felmlee and Old Salina roads. The store will have three service bays and 15 parking spaces.

Project to begin

Township manager Chad Findlay said work will begin in April on a major replacement of a main municipal waterline on Route 62.

The new eight-inch line will extend from the bottom of Seneca Hill to the Kwik Fill gasoline station, all on Riverside Drive.

Findlay said the final details involving a $1.2 million PennVEST loan to pay for the work have been completed.

The supervisors approved a request from St. Patrick School in Franklin to use the bike/walking trail on June 1 for a 5K, 10K and one-mile walk.

Brancato and Bonnie Summers, a member of the township’s economic development committee, reported the annual Cranberry Expo will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Cranberry Mall.

Cranberry businesses and local non-profit organizations will showcase their programs, services and products at the event.
