OC High School club holds Cultural Day

From staff reports

Oil City High School’s Diversity Club recently hosted its inaugural Cultural Day in the school gymnasium, where displays of 12 countries were set up.

The displays contained information about the history, language, economics, food and dress of those nations, along with other pertinent facts.

Students and school staff members had the opportunity to learn dances and sample food that originated in or is specific to a country.

Michelle Jones, Together We Can of Venango County’s vice president who also serves as the Diversity Club facilitator, and teacher Tara Heath, who serves as the club adviser, organized the event.

They encouraged students to present displays on countries their families originated from or of which they take a special interest.

In an effort to involve the entire student body and to provide a teaching tool, a scavenger hunt was part of Cultural Day.

Students were given a page of questions about the various countries, which required them to visit each table to find the answers. Students who successfully answered all the questions received five Oiler tickets.

Together We Can members helped with distribution of materials and provided directional assistance.
