Dump truck takes out power lines on Route 8

A dump truck caught some power lines with its raised bed near the intersection of Gibb Road and Allegheny Boulevard (Route 8) on Tuesday, taking out a small amount of power to the area during the afternoon.

Sugarcreek Borough police chief Bob Wenner said no one was injured from the incident, which Venango County 911 said took place at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Wenner said there was “certainly concern for the driver,” who had to remain in the vehicle until it was determined he could exit safely without being in danger from hot wires.

“We had hot wires that remained hot even though some breakers broke in the accident,” Wenner said. “Once Penelec killed the power, we could get him out. Penelec did a tremendous job and limited the loss of power to a very close area.”

He added that “everyone handled it well” and that “local businesses were very understanding and cooperative.”

Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department fire police assisted with traffic control, and Sugarcreek Borough maintenance crews helped with road blocks, as traffic along the road had to be rerouted to the side.

Wenner said the truck had been removed as of about 6 p.m., and he added that while Penelec had anticipated finishing work anywhere between 6 and 7 p.m., they had told him it might take longer.

The vehicle in question was a private contractor moving materials in and around the construction yard for IA Construction, and “it would appear that the bed or bucket of the tri-axle truck lowered but was still high enough that it caught some wires, or it caught the wires and started to lower,” Wenner said.

The chief added that the rear wheels of the truck were actually lifted slightly off the ground.

“It wasn’t an easy scene,” Wenner said. “I’d like to commend those who responded.”
