Federal free meals program for public school children extended

From staff reports

A free breakfast and lunch program for public school children has been extended nationwide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the end of the year.

While some school districts were already enrolled in a similar program to provide free meals, including the Oil City and Titusville school districts, other school districts are now covered through the extended USDA program.

Cranberry Area School District Superintendent Bill Vonada said in a Tuesday letter to parents that all students in the district are now eligible to receive a free breakfast and lunch on school days.

Vonada said the free meals began Tuesday and will last through Dec. 31, after the USDA released the school food program waivers.

“There is nothing you or your child needs to do to receive a free breakfast or lunch,” Vonada said. “Our cafeteria staff will serve all students who come through the meal lines a free breakfast and lunch.”

He said any student who has already paid for a regular school lunch since the first day of school on Sept. 1 will have their account credited for the cost of each regular school meal purchased.

Valley Grove School District Superintendent Kevin Briggs said on Wednesday that the district is finalizing the application process to be able to provide free lunches to students.
