The Heath Township Sportsmen’s Club held its annual youth fishing derby Saturday at Clear Creek State Park.

“This may be one of the biggest crowds we have ever had,” said Karlin Miller, the organizer of the event. “It’s good to see all of the kids out here today. This allows us to give back to the community.”

The sportsmen operate a hatchery at the old Heath Pump Station site further up the Clarion River.

“We receive fingerlings from the Pennsylvania Fish Commission and then we stock the local stream with them,” said Miller. “We have two fishing events, one for the kids and then we will re-stock the pond for the veterans fishing event.”

All of the work is done by volunteers and the prizes for the drawing are donated. “It’s a pleasure for the members to do this for the community,” he said.

“It’s been a great day,” said Miller.
