Franklin couple accused of child endangerment

A Franklin couple face charges after two young girls were found walking to Rite Aid in Franklin without adult supervision.

Franklin police, in a criminal complaint, said at about 4:15 p.m. Oct. 15, they were called to the area of Rite Aid on a report of two young girls crossing the 1000 block of Liberty Street unsupervised.

Police located the girls, who were stepsisters, ages 8 and 5, alone in Rite Aid wearing T-shirts and no coats, and the weather was about 50 degrees and rainy, the complaint said.

The father of one of the girls told police the two girls were supposed to be at the house of Meaghan Decker, 32, and Thomas Decker, 36, for a sleepover, the complaint said.

Meaghan Decker told police she had worked until 2 p.m. that day, and after work she and her husband were taking other kids home from the sleepover, the complaint said.

When she left the house, Meaghan Decker told her two young children and the other two young girls to stay upstairs and play, the complaint said.

She also asked a boy, whom she only knew by his first name, to watch the four young children, the complaint said.

The boy said he had been asked to watch the children and was unaware the two girls had left, the complaint said. He also said the Deckers’ children told him that the two girls had gone home, the complaint said.

Both Thomas and Meaghan Decker have been charged with a felony count of child endangerment and a misdemeanor count of child endangerment.

The Deckers’ arraignment is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today before District Judge Matthew Kirtland.

Their preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 1 before Kirtland.
