Franklin man facing burglary, theft charges

A Franklin man is facing theft-related charges for allegedly stealing marijuana from a Sugarcreek Borough apartment last month.

A criminal complaint filed through district judge Patrick Lowrey’s office said Sugarcreek police Lt. Ryan Ashbaugh received a complaint of a break-in Oct. 12.

Police were told by the apartment resident told police the home was entered through a rear window that couldn’t be locked at that $500 was removed from a kitchen cabinet, the complaint said.

On Oct. 29, Ashbaugh was sent to the area of Crestview Drive for a reported fight, the complaint said.

After arriving at that location it was determined that Benjamin Fornal, 27, and the apartment resident were involved, the complaint said.

The resident said Fornal admitted to him that he had broken into the apartment, and Ashbaugh spoke to other witnesses who heard the same thing, the complaint said.

Fornal eventually admitted to breaking into the victim’s home, but said he only took an ounce of marijuana, the complaint said.

Other information was gathered that collaborated his account, but the victim said $250 was missing, the complaint said.

Fornal was charged with a felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking. He was arraigned before Lowrey and placed in the Venango County jail on $25,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing has been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday in Central Court.
