Historian to tell colorful tales from Oil Region’s past

Local author and historian, Margo Mong, will present a program Thursday about the halcyon days and colorful personalities of the Pennsylvania Oil Region.

Sponsored by Franklin Preservation, the program “A Wagon, Two Horses and a Barrel of Whiskey” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20th at DeBence Antique Music World in Franklin.

The success of Drake’s well unleashed a torrent of activity and change in the Oil Region, according to Mong.

Roads in the area were barely passable and horses had short lives.   In Pithole in 1865, many horses were left to die where they fell.

Mong will share the tales of the teamsters who drove the wagons, the coming of the railroad with its “iron horse” that replaced them, and the fortunes that were won and lost during those times.

She will also recount the stories of many colorful personalities who populated the region.

Gypsies, millionaires, teamsters, circus performers, horse thieves, mummies and more will be featured in this illustrated program.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.  The DeBence Museum is handicapped accessible.
