Man accused of corruption of minors for incidents with girl, 14

From staff reports

An Ohio man is facing charges for having inappropriate contact with a 14-year-old Oil City girl he met over the internet.

Franklin state police said in a criminal complaint they were called Monday afternoon to a residence on Woodside Avenue in Cornplanter Township for a report of a possible altercation.

At the house, police spoke with a man who told them his 14-year-old daughter had been missing since Sunday and had been reported missing to Oil City police Sunday evening, the complaint said.

The man said a friend of his daughter’s had told him his daughter was with Joseph Snyder, 22, of Warren, Ohio, that Snyder was having sex with his daughter and that the two would be at her house in about 10 minutes, the complaint said.

When Snyder and the girl arrived, the girl’s father removed her from the vehicle and her friend called police to report an altercation, the complaint said.

The girl told police she had met Snyder over Facebook several months ago and became friends and that later she and Snyder exchanged explicit messages but no photos, according to the complaint.

When he asked her how old she was, she lied and said she was 17, the complaint said.

The girl admitted she and Snyder had sex multiple times and both had taken pictures and videos on their phones, the complaint said.

Police interviewed Snyder at the Franklin barracks later Monday, and he said they had sex at his residence in Warren, Ohio, seven or eight times, the complaint said.

Snyder said he would pick the girl up at her friend’s house or random stores in Oil City and drive her straight back to his residence and later he would drop her off at random places around Oil City, never taking her home, according to the complaint.

Snyder admitted he never had permission to take the girl from her parents, the complaint said.

Snyder was charged with two felony counts of corruption of minors and interference with custody of children.

He was arraigned Monday and placed in the Venango County jail with bail denied due to him being a threat to society.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled Sept. 13 in Central Court.
