748 charges against caretaker are withdrawn

From staff reports

Charges filed against an Oil City woman accused of stealing nearly $40,000 while working as a caretaker were withdrawn Wednesday in Venango County Central Court.

Assistant District Attorney Justin Fleeger said all 748 charges 26-year-old Samantha Jo Stevenson was facing in connection with an identity theft incident were withdrawn.

Fleeger said there is a chance the charges could be refiled pending further investigation.

Stevenson had been charged with 14 felony counts of forgery; 360 counts of access device is counterfeit, altered or incomplete; and 374 misdemeanor counts of identity theft.

A criminal complaint filed through district judge Andrew Fish’s office said Stevenson had been working for a 66-year-old man at a home on Schoolhouse Hill Road in Oil City.

During that time, Stevenson obtained access to the man’s checkbook and forged 14 checks, the complaint said. The 14 check forgeries totaled $4,055, according to the complaint.

In addition, Stevenson gained access to the man’s debit card between December and April and used it 360 times, the complaint said. The total amount used on the debit card was $35,254.96, according to the complaint.
