Kids bike rodeo set Saturday in OC

From staff reports

PennDOT, the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce and Cub Scout Pack 17 of Oil City are partnering for a free children’s bicycle rodeo from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of Justus Park in Oil City.

The event is open to ages 5 to 12, and registration will begin at 10 a.m.

All attendees will need to bring a bike and helmet and be accompanied by a parent or guardian who can sign a permission slip for participation.

The rodeo will consist of safety activities, games and bicycle/helmet inspections. State Rep. R. Lee James will provide a hot dog lunch for all attendees, and prize bags will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis.

Wearing a helmet is required, and a limited number of free helmets will be available from Safe Kids Clarion-Venango.

The goal of the bike rodeo is to interest children in bicycling, educate them on safety requirements and instill safe biking habits.

PennDOT will offer free bicycle safety tool kits for children and adult bikers. The kits include bicycle reflectors, tire repair kits and blinking clip-on lights.

The kits are made available through the Non-motorized Safety Grant Funds authorized under the Fast Act to improve communication between new, veteran, and children bikers as well as motorists.

This event is also made possible through the additional support of the Oil Heritage Festival Committee, the Venango County Sheriff’s Office and the American League of Bicyclists.
