Local teacher wins Literacy Award

Seneca Reading Council named Sarah Margherio, of Oil City, the 2016 Celebrate Literacy Award winner at its April meeting.

Margherio shared her love of reading with countless children throughout her teaching career with the Oil City Area School District. During her last 20 years of teaching, she purchased a book in honor of each of her students’ birthdays and donated them to the Oakland Elementary School library.

Margherio also began the local “Every Child Deserves a Good Night” program through Christ Episcopal Church in 2012. The program provides a warm pair of pajamas and a book to read to those in need.

When Margherio began the program, her goal was to be able to get 50 sets to distribute; in 2015, she was able to distribute 580 sets of pajamas and books.
