OC OKs budget, hires elementary principal

Oil City School Board members on Monday unanimously approved the district’s budget for the 2020-2021 school year and hired an elementary principal.

The budget doesn’t call for a tax increase as the millage rate will remain the same as it has for the last 19 years – 16.61 mills.

The vote was 7-0 as Fred Weaver and Stephen Kelley were absent.

Meanwhile, Anne Curran, the assistant principal at Oil City High School, was hired as the principal at Seventh Street and Smedley Street elementary schools and federal programs coordinator.

That vote was also unanimous, and Curran’s annual salary will be $80,263.

Curran became assistant high school principal in July 2018. She had previously been an English teacher at Oil City High School.

A vote to approve the elimination of the boys and girls soccer programs beginning with the 2020-2021 school year was tabled at the recommendation of the board’s co-curricular activities committee.

“Given discussion with parents and staff the recommendation of the co-curricular activities committee is to table the motion,” board member Mark Kerr said.

Kerr said talks with parents about the program have been productive.

“They were very respectful. They brought their ideas and the school district expressed its concerns and I think we have a way to move forward,” Kerr said.

In other business, the board approved a plan to to have synthetic turf installed at the high school stadium. The turf would be installed by Shaw Sports Turf at a cost of $381,840.

The board also approved the bid from Att Sports Inc. to resurface the track and tennis courts and install a javelin runway at a cost of $303,055.

The panel will hold a combined work session and voting machine July 20.
