Historical Society gets big pledge for ledger

The countdown continues on the Venango County Historical Society’s bid for a “priceless” artifact.

An anonymous donor has pledged half the purchase price toward an 18th century ledger if the society can make up the other half, said Marlie Manning, executive director of the Historical Society.

The ledger, which is currently in the possession a private seller, is priced at $7,500.

That means the Historical Society must come up with $3,750 in pledges to be matched by the anonymous donor’s other half, Manning said.

The ledger was owned by Venango County trading post owner Edward Hale and contains notations of purchases and trades by local settlers.

Anyone wishing to make a pledge can call the Historical Society at (814) 432-8260.

Pledges must be received by noon Friday.
