Valley Grove recognizes two district employees

Valley Grove School District administrators and school board members honored two district employees at the board’s meeting Monday.

Geoffrey Sanner was recognized for his work to develop the new drivers education program at Rocky Grove High School.

High school principal Kelly Hart said there is “so much that (Sanner) has done that he doesn’t need to,” adding that he would get kids out on the road whenever he could, whether that was during a free period for a student or after school.

Hart also said PennDOT has approved Sanner to give students their driver’s tests, and PennDOT also approved his mapped out course for the tests along with his backup course.

Sanner, who is a 2011 Rocky Grove graduate, is also getting his commercial driver’s license so he can drive school buses.

The board also recognized district business manager Lori Hannon for her contributions and financial leadership.

Monday was Hannon’s last school board meeting as she is retiring March 18.

In other business at Monday’s meeting, the board heard from parent Ken Hamilton who asked that a flagpole be placed on the district’s baseball and softball field.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance at the meeting, Hamilton told the board, “You just proved my point. We need a flag” as he referred to the baseball and softball field.

He explained that every other sporting event has access to a flag.

“The flag allows these men and women to play ball in a free country,” Hamilton told the board. “Flagpoles are not expensive,” he added.

The board approved placing a flagpole on the field, and district facilities manager Terry Tantlinger will look into the cost for the pole.

Hamilton also said the ball field needs attention as the infield dirt is lower than the grass, and he asked the board to look into adding some dirt.

Nothing was approved at the meeting, but Superintendent Kevin Briggs said the board will discuss the matter at an upcoming meeting.

The panel also approved the tentative 2023-24 school year calendar, and Briggs said there were no changes to the district’s February health and safety plan.
