PennWest Clarion’s 23rd annual Juneteenth celebration will take place at 11 a.m. on June 13 in Carlson Library, with a free lunch to follow and the option to join virtually via Zoom. This year’s keynote speaker is Brandon K. Wiley, a Sharon native and award-winning mental health professional, who will present on identity, power, and progress. Pittsburgh jazz musician and educator Calvin Stemley will perform at the event, bringing decades of musical and mentoring experience. The celebration, founded at Clarion in 2003 by Dr. Brenda Sanders Dédé, honors Juneteenth—the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom—and has been recognized as a federal holiday since 2021.
