Cranberry board, union approve teacher contract

Cranberry School Board members voted Tuesday in a special meeting to approve a five-year collective bargaining agreement with the district’s teachers union.

The contract had been approved earlier Tuesday by the union, although it has yet to be signed and made public.

Once the pact is signed, it will be applied retroactively to July 1 and extend until June 30, 2027.

Board president Tom Neely said the contract includes adjustments in health insurance, co-pays, retirement, and sick day payments, as well as scheduled raises.

In addition, the agreement makes coaching positions open to the public at the same time they open to teachers. Currently, teachers are given preference when applying to coaching positions in the district.

“This makes it more open to get the best person qualified for the field,” said Neely.

The board approved the contract by an 8-0 vote. Ben Carbaugh was absent.

In another matter at Tuesday’s meeting, the board heard from McClure Company on its preliminary findings from a district-wide feasibility study on ways to conserve energy.

Eric Petrazio, a representative of the company, also presented to the board at its May meeting.

Petrazio shared with the board some of the findings of the study. One focus of the study was replacing the current HVAC system, which is 33 years old.

“These systems usually last 20 to 25 years, so you have got a lot of mileage out of this one, and when one boiler shuts down, then the other one has to work twice as hard, and it becomes a domino effect of things shutting down,” said Petrazio.

Several replacement suggestions were included in the study, including solar and geothermal energy. Petrazio pointed out that these systems would cost more up front but save money in the long-term.

Other areas looked at for potential renovation included the gym, auditorium, entryway, bathrooms and shell of the building.

Now that the board has heard the preliminary findings of the feasibility study, members can decide who to hire to complete renovations and which renovations to prioritize.
