Franklin’s directional kiosk to be unveiled today

After years in the planning, a new directional kiosk with a list of downtown retail businesses and restaurants will be unveiled along Liberty Street in Franklin today.

Community members are invited to attend the unveiling, which will take place at 9:30 a.m. along the Liberty Street sidewalk in front of Fountain Park.

A $50 Franklin Retail and Business Association gift card will be awarded to one person in attendance at the unveiling.

In addition to a map of downtown retail and restaurant businesses, the four-sided, backlit kiosk will feature a map of the Oil Region National Heritage Area and information about downtown Franklin, as well as advertising.

Next year, the plan is to add a schedule of events.

“The map is the big thing,” said Franklin Retail Association administrator Jennifer Taylor. “People say all the time, ‘Oh, I didn’t know this was here’.”

“You see a storefront, and you don’t know what’s inside, how many different stores or vendors are inside that shop,” added Jodi Lewis, executive director of the Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce. “There’s so much here, it will be nice for people to be able to see, ‘Oh, That’s where that is’.”

The business directory itself will not be ready by Saturday afternoon since some changes recently had to be made and the new version isn’t printed yet.

“We had hoped to get it up a few weeks ago, but…it all takes a little longer than you hope,” Taylor said. “We got the logos and headers finally, but some of the posters are still not done.”

But the organizations still wanted to get the kiosk unveiled, Lewis said.

The kiosk is the result of a collaboration between the Retail Association, Chamber of Commerce and Franklin Moving Forward, with funding from the Oil Region Alliance and Venango County and assistance from the city.
