Salvation Army Family Store looking for smaller site

The Franklin Salvation Army Family Store, now located in the former Blair Building on Route 8, is looking for a new location in town.

The thrift store has been making use of the building since September 2016, when it relocated from its previous space down the road to make room for more inventory.

Since then, the building has been found to be too large for the store’s needs, according to Herb Rader, the manager of the Erie Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. The center leases the building in Franklin.

“The store moved to a larger location, and it’s not working out. It’s far too big, the expenses are too high and we’re looking to downsize,” Rader said.

The store will remain at its current location while the property search continues, Rader said. The relocation timeframe is set at three to six months.

“For the time being we’ll remain open, but we need to be smaller, and we need more sales,” said Rader.

Depending on the size of the new building and staffing requirements, some employees could be laid off, Rader said. Building renovations are also a consideration.

“Ideally we’ll find something sooner rather than later, but these things take some time,” Rader said. “But our first choice is to be in Franklin.”
