2 men who served during WWII share their experiences

Walter N. Early (left), of Callensburg, was just 17 years of age when he joined the Merchant Marine during World War II. Dean Lewis (right), joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 17. He attended the Veterans Picnic with his son, Larry, who is behind him.

Two World War II veterans, Walter Early, 98, and Dean Lewis, 97, were honored at the Clarion County Veterans Picnic on Saturday. Early served in the Merchant Marine, making a year-long voyage that took him across the Atlantic, Pacific, and through the Suez Canal, while Lewis joined the Navy at 17 and served on the USS Macon cruiser until the war ended. Both men went on to long marriages and careers after the war. The annual picnic at Clarion County Park drew a strong turnout, with families, good food, and a tribute to veterans, and is set to return in 2026.
