Annual Friends for Food campaign has kicked off

The 33rd annual Friends for Food campaign is well underway, and Community Services of Venango County is gearing up for its distribution next month that will again take place in the form of a drive-through event.

Distribution is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Rocky Grove fire hall, beginning at 8 a.m.

The Friends for Food effort is a joint venture between Community Services of Venango County and The Derrick and The News-Herald.

Community Services began using the drive-through method in 2020 due to the pandemic. But Community Services has since found that both the agency and community prefer the drive-through.

Last year was Meghan Dunham’s first year as the Community Services executive director, and she said she left the distribution event feeling “so rejuvenated that I was able to see and greet everyone.”

“I was able to wave and say ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ to every single car. It was so wonderful and I look forward to that experience again this year,” Dunham said.

Not only does the drive-through method give both the volunteers and community a more personal experience, but Dunham said it has a “smoother flow,” keeps the guests warm and “allows for health safety.”

Much like last year, Community Services has set a limit of 60 volunteers to help out on distribution day. Those looking to volunteer can register by dialing #211.

The distribution is open to residents of Venango and Forest counties. Guests must take proof of residency, typically a driver’s license, to the distribution.

“We’re hoping to go for 1,400,” Dunham said about Community Services’ goal for the amount of bags they hope to distribute this year. “We’re waiting for our local vendors to get their bids back for the turkeys.”

Community Services distributed 1,200 bags last year.

“With the cost of turkeys last year, we were only able to purchase 1,200. But we’re hoping this year we’re able to hit the 1,400 mark but it all depends on the availability and cost,” Dunham said.

“Any donations to The Derrick are obviously helpful because this is how we’re able to fund (the distribution). Any donations are always accepted and appreciated,” Dunham said.
