Oiler Marching Band steps in time to the music of Huston, Estefan, and Madonna

Drum Major Tanner Krepp, a junior at Oil City High School this year, practices his conducting on Friday while the Oiler Marching Band practices at Pioneer Flats on the last day of band camp at Two Mile Park.

Music from the 1980s filled Pioneer Flats at Two Mile Run County Park on Friday as the Oiler Marching Band took the field on their last day of band camp.

This years show, “Ladies from the 80s” features the music of Whitney Huston, Gloria Estefan and Madonna, band director Dan Cartwright said.

“It’s a fun show, energetic. The kids are really buying into it,” Cartwright said.

The marching band has been practicing for three weeks already this year and on Friday evening they put it all together in a preview show at Two Mile Park for their parents.

The band this year is 82 students strong, including “a nice contingent from Cranberry” Area School District, Cartwright said, adding that this year is the first year some of the Cranberry students are participating in the band front.

The weather has been great this week for band camp — sunny but not too hot and humid, he noted.

The band will be performing at Bridgefest this Friday in Oil City and at the Oilers’ first football game on Aug. 22.

Music in Oil Country band festival is coming up on Sept. 6 and this year it will feature 14 marching bands, including Westminster College’s marching band, Cartwright said.
