Beans were aplenty in Brookville

Harry Eshbaugh, a 99-year-old World War II veteran from Summerville, shares his experience with Air Force veteran Jessica McWain during “Uncle Billy’s Bean Bake” in Brookville on Thursday. Eshbaugh was being trained as a navigator on a B-29 Superfortress bomber when the war ended.

Around 100 people attended “Uncle Billy’s Bean Bake” by American Legion Post 102 in Brookville on Thursday, part of the Brookville Laurel Festival. This event, inspired by Civil War soldiers’ reunions, featured beans, hard tack, and coffee. Battlefield interpreter Larry Anthony shared insights on a soldier’s life, while local Bluegrass band “Gravel Lick” performed, including the song “The Old Army Bean.” Named after Vietnam veteran Sgt. William Littlefield, the event showcased his cooking skills. The festival continues through Sunday.
