On Thursday, Central Elementary third-grader Landon Neely was recognized for his talent in writing in the PBS Kids Writers Contest, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Erie.

Landon, who took third place in the third-grade group, was up against 255 other writers from kindergarten through grade 5.

To be eligible, students must live in the PBS viewing area and must write an original story with at least five original illustrations or pictures. In Landon’s story, “The Busy Day,” his family needed help showing cows at one of the largest 4-H shows, and their problem was solved through the kindness of strangers.

The awards ceremony took place at the WQLN station in Erie, where prize winners shared their stories and earned an award and ribbon, along with a gift card to Barnes & Noble and a prize — a writers’ desk with writing and drawing supplies.

After the awards, a celebration was held with food and treats for students, families and teachers.
