Church collecting books, pjs for local children

From staff reports

Many children go to bed every night without a pair of warm pajamas, and many children have never enjoyed being tucked into bed by a parent with a bedtime story.

Christ Episcopal Church would like to change that, the congregation will be collection new sleepwear and children’s books.

Each pair of pajamas and books will be given to children in need in the local area.

Sarah Margherio, a retired teacher began the project in 2012 as an opportunity for her church’s small congregation to minister the community.

The original goal was to be able to donate 30 to 50 pairs of pajamas. Margherio did not anticipate overwhelming support of the efforts.

“I love that so many people see the importance of children having books and pajamas because every child deserves a good night,” said Margherio.

Over the four years of the drive, more than 1500 sets of pajamas and books have been donated to children in the area.

The pajamas must be new, sizes from infant to adult are accepted. Books should be in good condition, or can be purchased using cash donations.

Margherio will match books with an age appropriate book, wrap them in tissue and a ribbon. The packages will be delivered to groups for distribution.

“I’ve always loved and have always enjoyed sharing my love of books with Children,” said Margherio. “The simple gift of pajamas and a book lets children know someone cares.”

Donations can be dropped off at Christ Church at 16 Central Ave. from 9 a.m. To 2 p.m. Weekdays or anytime at 552 Bouquin Circle, Oil City.
