Deadline passed, state tallying up new voter registrations

HARRISBURG (AP) – The registration deadline to vote in Pennsylvania’s election has come and gone, and state officials say counties are still tallying up the registrations that poured in.

A Department of State spokeswoman said Thursday that currently available voter registration statistics are expected to change substantially as more information trickles in from counties.

Tuesday was the last day to register. This presidential election is the first in Pennsylvania in which voters could register online.

The latest statistics show a slight increase in the number of registered voters, to almost 8.6 million, from the 2012 presidential election. The number of registered Republicans grew 4 percent to over 3.2 million while Democrats fell 3 percent to below 4.2 million.

Third-party voters or independents grew 5 percent to nearly 1.2 million.
