Former Sasol plant has been purchased by BKI

The former Sasol Phenolics site on Route 8 north of Oil City is now owned by Bert Klapec Inc. (BKI).

Nick Klapec, a representative of BKI, confirmed the sale in an interview with the newspaper.

Sasol made the decision to close the plant in early 2022 and stopped production in June 2022.

Sarah Hughes, the Sasol stakeholder relations manager, said the sale to BKI a couple of months ago was made under the agreement BKI would complete the remaining demolition.

“A small number of employees remain on site to complete decommissioning,” said Hughes. She explained that those employees are working with state regulators to ensure that materials are handled in a way that protects both public and environmental health.

Klapec said the demolition should be done within a year, but he wasn’t able to give a more exact timeline.

He added that the demolition wouldn’t be “total” and that some structures would be left standing for future use.

Klapec was unable to address BKI’s future plans for the site of if there are plans to hire additional staff to run the location.

Previous Sasol employees at the Oil City plant were offered positions within the company at other locations, according to Hughes.

Additionally, employees choosing to leave the company were provided job search assistance by Sasol.
