OC fire department distributes about 460 coats

The Oil City Fire Department handed out about 460 coats to children in need in Venango County this year through its Coats for Kids Program.

The coats were distributed Friday by the Oil City, Valley Grove and Cranberry school districts, said John Horn, an Oil City firefighter who organizes the coat drive every year.

Horn added that Franklin School District had coats left over from last year that are being given out this year.

The cost of the coats came in at just under $9,000 this year, Horn said. The program’s main sponsors were A. Crivelli Auto Group and the Oil Creek Family Campground, Horn said.

The goal of the firefighters is to provide a winter coat for every child in Venango County from kindergarten through fourth or fifth grade (depending on their size) who needs one.

Horn said the fire department accept donations all year for Coats for Kids.

Monetary contributions can be sent to or dropped off at the Oil City Fire Department at 404 Central Ave.

Checks can be made payable to Oil City Firefighters Local 700 attention coats for kids.
