Sarah Camden’s accelerated seventh-grade literature class at Oil City Middle School recently worked together to write and publish a book.

The work of fiction is titled “How to Live: Your Way” and “is about what happens when all books get banned,” Camden said.

Over the course of a month, the students developed the plot of their original story. They were responsible for creating and voting on the story idea, using characterization to develop well-rounded characters, creating the conflict in the story that drove the plot line, identifying their voice and point of view, and working together to create a cohesive story.

“The students were involved in the publishing process and learned many lessons on teamwork, communication and compromise,” Camden said. “I am incredibly proud of the hard work displayed by my students and have been enlightened by the passion, drive and creativity my class has shown.”

In the story, the main characters struggle against a world where there is no individuality and everyone is the same, ultimately changing the world for the better as a result of writing a book.
