Oil City’s Community Cleanup Day slated April 20

From staff reports

Oil City’s annual Community Cleanup Day will be held Wednesday, April 20.

Local businesses, organizations, groups, and individuals are invited to participate in the day’s activities that are coordinated by the Oil City Main Street Program with support from Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, PennDOT, and the City of Oil City.

“Community Cleanup Day is a favorite for many folks,” Main Street manager Kathy Bailey said. “A spring cleanup event is a great opportunity to get together with co-workers, friends, or family and spruce up our downtown areas.”

Bailey added that “we’ve got a lot of people who take pride in our community and like to get some fresh air and roll up their sleeves. It’s also a good target date for businesses to tidy up their storefronts, wash windows and doors, or make note of repairs that may be needed.”

Volunteers may choose their own work areas or be assigned a clean-up area when they register. The primary tasks for participating groups include sweeping, raking, and hand pick-up of litter, leaves, brush, and winter debris.

Although Main Street’s focus is on downtown areas, participants may choose to clean another area of Oil City if desired. Groups may also adopt their desired area and commit to cleaning it regularly throughout the 2022 season.

Participants may choose from three shifts — 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 4 p.m., and 4 to 8 p.m. Check-in will be at the Oil City Town Square and participants are asked to bring their own rakes, brooms, or related tools.

Adult supervision will be required for all participants under 18. Bottled water, light snacks, garbage bags, and work gloves will be provided by the Main Street Program.

At the end of the event, the Oil City Fire Department will hose down the downtown streets, and the city’s public works department will pick up bags of refuse collected by the volunteers.

Registration forms are available on the Events & News page at oilcitymainstreet.org or on the Oil City Main Street Facebook page.
