Oil Creek State Park to host events

From staff reports

A tour of the Petroleum Centre train station hosted by Oil Creek State Park will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Participants will be able to see what life was like in the 1860s oil boom town as the group will go on a guided tour of “the wickedest town east of the Mississippi.”

Participants will walk the boardwalk trail, a recreation of what the 1860s sidewalks would have been like, and learn about the businesses, homes, and people in Petroleum Centre.

There will also be an optional showing after the tour of “The Valley That Changed the World” in the amphitheater.

Registration is required, and people can register by calling (814) 676-1810 or emailing ikuberry@pa.gov.

The park will also host a survival skills day from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the McCrea Farm (the cross country ski area) at the park.

The park naturalist will lead a workshop on a few basic survival skills including fire starting, using a map and compass, how to build an emergency shelter, and a number of safety and precautionary tactics.

Participants are asked to dress for the weather.

Registration is required. Register by calling (814) 676-1810 or emailing ikuberry@pa.gov.
