Rare ‘light pillars’ in Franklin

Light pillars, a unique weather phenomenon that occur on cold, calm nights in the dead of winter, were spotted by Sandra Deligiannis from her front door on Elk Street in Franklin at 11 p.m. Friday evening. She took this photo of the light pillars across from the back of the former Franklin Club. Light pillars occur when plate-shaped ice crystals are suspended in the atmosphere close to the ground, according to The Weather Channel. When light reflects off those crystals, it creates vertical beams that extend above or below the light source.
