Retired sports editor receives ‘Unsung Hero’ award

From staff reports

Penny Weichel, retired longtime sports editor at The Derrick, has received an “Unsung Hero” award from the d9and10sports.com website that focuses on the high school sports scene in districts 9 and 10.

Those two districts encompass the high schools in the northwest Pennsylvania region.

The website noted that Weichel has been covering sports in District 10 for quite some time, starting at The Derrick in the early 1970s.

Weichel is believed to be one of, if not the first, female sports editor at a Pennsylvania newspaper.

She worked at The Derrick and later The News-Herald as well for more than 40 years in both sports and news before her retirement. And she still contributes occasional sports feature stories to the newspapers.

The d9and10sports website notes that Weichel founded her own website, route8rivarly.com, which is dedicated to covering all things Oil City and Franklin sports.

Originally, she founded ocpafootball.com and franklinpafootball.com, and the information from those sites can be found on the route8rivalry site as well.

“Quite simply, it’s the most comprehensive source of information for the history of Franklin and Oil City sports (along with Venango Catholic), with Penny constantly keeping it up to date with the current teams as well,” the d9and10 website said in announcing Weichel’s award.

“Penny’s love for local sports and student-athletes knows no bounds, and her knowledge and longevity are matched by few, if any, in District 10,” the website added.
