Several events planned in July at Oil Creek

Oil Creek State Park has several activities planned in July.

Here’s a look at what the park is offering:

Aqua hike

An aqua hike is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 7, at the Egbert Farm Day Use Area.

This program’s content is variable, so guests should be prepared to learn about the importance of Oil Creek and its role in the ecosystem, its history and the wildlife that thrives in the park.

The creek bed is rocky and can be difficult to maneuver for some people.

Guests should bring sturdy and close-toed shoes they don’t mind getting wet as well as a towel and change of clothes.

Wildflower walk

A wildflower walk will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, July 14, at the Petroleum Centre Bike Trail parking area.

Bike to Brews (coffee)

Guests will have the opportunity to take a 15-mile round-trip ride on Justus Trail with park staff as they explore the nature and history between Franklin and Oil City during a Bike to Brews event from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, July 16.

A short portion of the ride will be on the road.

Attendees may take their own bike or borrow one of the park’s bikes. Helmets are required and available through the park.

Guests will meet at the Samuel Justus Recreation Trail Visitor Center, 4514 Route 322 in Franklin.

Oil Creek bat count

The park will conduct its yearly bat count from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at the Egbert Farm Day Use Area.

Guests will learn about the bat species found in Pennsylvania and why they are important to ecosystems.

Petroleum Centre tour

Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the “Wickedest Town East of the Mississippi,” Petroleum Centre, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Petroleum Centre train station.

The tour follows a boarded walkway for less than half a mile with multiple stops along the way to look at foundations, artifacts and photographs.
