Speaker series to wrap with WWII recollection

World War II-era letters, photographs, a group history book and a map tracing the path of the 1104th Engineer Combat Group are among items discovered by Debbie Bell while cleaning out her mother’s home.

The Grove City Area Historical Society will conclude its Fall Speaker Series with a special Veterans Day program by Debbie Bell at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Historical Society, 111 College Ave.

While cleaning out her mother’s home, Bell discovered a box of letters her father had written while serving as a combat engineer in Europe during World War II, along with maps and a group history book of the 1104th Engineer Combat Group.

The discovery sparked a journey of discovery that led Bell and her family on a 2019 trip tracing her father’s footsteps from Normandy to Germany.

Bell will share her father’s wartime experiences and her family’s modern-day journey, blending war history, family stories, personal photos and excerpts from those letters written to the home front.

The event is free and open to the public. The Grove City Area Historical Society is handicap accessible.
