Titusville, Franklin men take titles in stone-skipping

The 2016 Pennsylvania Stone Skipping competition was held Saturday at Franklin’s Rock in River Festival. Participants from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Florida and even Canada came to show off their stone-skipping prowess as they skipped rocks across the Allegheny River.

In the professional division, Dave Ohmer of Titusville took first place with 40 skips. Drew Quayle of Ontario and Ken Anderson of Titusville came in just behind with 38 and 37 skips, respectively.

The amateur division was led by Jay Urbassick of Franklin with 33 skips. Dagan Bontrager of Pittsburgh and Greg Hyziewicz of Erie followed with 31 skips each. In a tiebreaker, Bontrager threw 24 skips and Hyziewicz threw 17.

First place in the youth division went to Alex Ferry of Warren with 22 skips. Dominick Greer of Franklin came in second with 18 skips and Gibson DeGroot of Hamilton, Michigan, took third with 13 skips.
