Tobacco-free zones recommended at Sugarcreek playgrounds

Sugarcreek Borough Council members have been asked by borough administrator Joe Sporer to adopt a resolution that would create tobacco-free areas at playgrounds within the borough.

Sporer has recommended the resolution after an increased in tobacco usage at the playgrounds.

The signs will say “Young Lungs at Play” and would create tobacco-free areas at the Reno and Rocky Grove playgrounds, according to Sporer.

There would be no cost to the borough for the signs if the borough approves the resolution.

No decisions were made during Wednesday’s meeting, but Sporer said he “anticipates” council will pass the resolution at its Oct. 5 meeting.

In other business at Wednesday’s council meeting, Sporer talked about the damage done to the pavilion at the Rocky Grove playground.

He mentioned that kids were throwing basketballs at the ceiling of the pavilion, which is messing with the molding and underlay of the ceiling.

The pavilion, he said, was built about seven years ago at a cost of $40,000.

If the damage continues, Sporer recommended taking the basketball hoops out of the playground and replacing them with a parking lot.

No decisions were made during the meeting.

Sporer also told council he has just started the preliminary budget process for 2023, and, at this moment, he doesn’t see a need for a tax increase.

Nine new homes have been built in the borough this year, and Sporer said after the meeting “that is truly a positive indicator going forward to the tax base.”

Council also approved a memorandum of understanding between the borough and Venango County regarding the Route 8 sidewalk.

In addition, council also approved the traffic signal plans that go with the sidewalk.

The plans include new overhead lights, signals, a sound system and markings on the road, according to Sporer.

The plans won’t cost the borough anything, but once PennDOT is done with the project, the borough will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of that intersection, Sporer said Thursday.

In another matter, maintenance foreman Doug Freer told council Shaffer Run Road will be closed for three weeks for a maintenance project involving water damage. The road will be closing Tuesday.

Council also approved its annual $300 donation to the Venango County Coon and Fox Club for the use of the club’s facility for police training.

And trick or treat hours in the borough were set from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.
