OC school retirees set first-day celebration

From staff reports

Retired Oil City Area School District staff members will hold their 20th annual first-day-of-school celebration Tuesday, Sept. 1.

The celebration marks a day when in prior years the staff would be headed to work.

The event will be held at 11:30 a.m. at Hoss’s Restaurant in Cranberry Township. It is open to retirees, including custodians, teachers, aides, principals, cafeteria workers and all others who retired from the Oil City district.

Masks will be required and seating will be arranged based on coronavirus guidelines.

The luncheon tradition began when Jeannette Thompson and Marilyn Karns, both retired Oil City elementary teachers, decided they would like to gather with their former co-workers.

The date of the celebration has always coincided with the first day of school because, as the organizers noted, they could “celebrate without going to work.”
