Oil Region Library group preps for 2nd mega book, media sale

The Oil Region Library Association is having its second “mega” book and media benefit sale that will run for three consecutive weekends beginning April 19.

The Library Association, composed of the Franklin, Oil City and Cooperstown libraries, will hold its big sale at the newly-opened Gems Donation Station in the former Franklin Salvation Army building in Sugarcreek Borough.

“All three libraries have worked together in this joint venture,” said Dan Flaherty, director of the Library Association. “We are providing one-stop shopping, which was one of the benefits of having the partnership. By working together, we have been able to collect 100,000 items.”

The sale will include books, CDs, DVDs, LPs, tapes, magazines, VHS tapes and audio books.

Organizing the show is the company Mr. Bookman, which is owned by Ben Wilkinson.

“We now have a permanent place for the sale, and we plan to run it twice a year, in the spring and fall,” Flaherty said.

Flaherty added that the alliance hopes to make the sale better every year. This year the material will be organized both by subject and alphabetically so customers can more easily find materials.

Flaherty also expressed gratitude to all the volunteers who have helped with preparations for the sale, including the “friends” groups at the libraries.

“We can use volunteers before the sale, during the sale and after the sale,” Flaherty said. “Ben is also looking for volunteers. The more volunteers, the more we can improve.”

The libraries are still accepting donations of items for the sale, which will run Friday to Sunday April 19-21, Friday to Sunday April 26-28, Wednesday, May 1, and Friday to Monday, May 3-6.
