Police investigating remains found in Oil Creek park

Franklin state police are investigating the discovery of human remains that were found in Oil Creek State Park.

The skeletal remains were found Friday in a remote area of the park, Venango County Coroner Christina Rugh said.

Rugh added that getting to the site was quite a trek.

Rugh said the remains are being analyzed by Mercyhurst University’s forensic anthropology department in Erie. That will allow for an estimation of how long the remains were there as well as the sex and approximate age of the person who died.

Franklin state police community services officer Michelle McGee said people who were at the park to fish found the remains.

McGee said police don’t have any more information at this time, and she added that troopers are waiting on results from Dr. Dennis Dirkmaat’s analysis of the remains.

Dirkmaat is a well-known forensic pathologist at Mercyhurst University.
