Astronomy center to hold public night

From staff reports

The Oil Region Astronomy Learning Center (ORAS) has scheduled a free public night on Saturday with presentations and events, including how you can name the next exoplanet.

Weather permitting, there will be opportunities to observe a variety of celestial objects through the facilities 30-inch telescope, the largest available to the public in western Pennsylvania.

There also will be a presentation by Suzana Filipecki Martins, international outreach officer at the International Astronomical Union’s Office for Astronomy Outreach, where she manages a portfolio of worldwide astronomy outreach projects. Previously, she was a project coordinator at Leiden Observatory, overseeing the implementation of the spaceEU project, and a project manager at Ecsite, the European network of science centres and museums in Belgium.

ORAS is located at 4249 Camp Coffman Road, Cranberry Township. The site will open to the public at 7:30 p.m., and events will run between 8 and 11 p.m.

To join the presentation virtually, register before noon on Saturday at www.surveymonkey.com/r/OrasPublic.
