Bus carrying OC wrestlers involved in crash

From staff reports

A bus carrying the Oil City High School boys wrestling team collided with a semi-truck on Route 6 just outside Union City late Wednesday afternoon.

The Oilers were on their way to General McLane High School for a match.

Oil City athletic director Amy Highfield said the bus was on Route 6 outside of Union City when the crash occurred. She said none of the team members were injured but they were checked out as a precaution.

Highfield said that as the bus was coming up over a hill, the semi-truck on the other side of the roadway jackknifed and caused the crash.

Fort Leboeuf sent a back-up bus to keep the Oil City team warm while they waited for the scene to clear. The match with the Lancers was postponed.

“I assume it was just weather related, but I’m just very thankful that (the boys are) OK,” Highfield said.

Oil City High School wrestling coach Mike Crocker said the team returned to Oil City around 7:15 p.m. after a Union City bus picked them up.

“It was scary and we saw it coming. The bus driver did a good job avoiding the truck,” Crocker said. “It put us off the road and it happened so quickly that there was no way to completely avoid it.”

Crocker also said the bus driver was driven to a hospital to assess his condition.

Erie state police were investigating the crash Wednesday evening.
