Clintonville man charged in child pornography case

From staff reports

A Clintonville man is facing numerous charges after state police said he was found to have been in possession of and shared child pornography.

A trooper with the state police computer crime unit found that a computer was sharing pornographic images and videos of young girls on Nov. 25, 2018, and traced the computer to Daniel Leroy Whitmer, 64, according to a criminal complaint filed by police through District Judge Patrick Lowrey’s office.

When police interviewed Whitmer, he told them that he knew possessing and viewing child pornography was wrong so he stopped doing it and deleted the images and videos off his devices, the complaint said.

Police seized Whitmer’s devices and found that he had deleted all the images and videos of child pornography, the complaint said.

Police then conducted a forensic investigation of the devices and recovered over 100 pornographic images and videos of underage girls, according to the complaint.

Whitmer has been charged with five felony counts of dissemination of photographs/film of child sex acts, 50 felony counts of child pornography and one felony count of criminal use of a communication facility.

He was arraigned before Lowrey on Monday.

Whitmer’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 12 before Lowrey.
