Cooperstown home catches on fire

A fire at a Cooperstown home elicited a large response but was quickly controlled Monday afternoon.

The call came in just before 1 p.m. for a report of black smoke in the basement of a home at 3751 Lamberton Road.

Cooperstown, Rocky Grove, and Utica volunteer firefighters were dispatched, along with Cooperstown EMS and Community Ambulance Service.

Cooperstown fire chief Steve Novak said Oakland and Chapmanville volunteers were also called but were held at staging once it was determined the fire was contained and being subdued.

Penelec was called to the scene at about 1:30 p.m.

No residents or fire personnel were injured, according to Novak.

No cause for the fire was determined, and Novak said he had notified a state police fire marshal about the blaze.

Novak said part of the reason so many departments responded initially is that departments have been feeling staffing issues for some time, so “when fire or smoke is seen,“ a second alarm is immediately called in just to ensure there will be adequate personnel until the scene can be triaged.

It’s better to have an over response than not enough manpower or tankers at a scene that needs a response, Novak said.

The scene was cleared by 2:30 p.m. Monday.
